Pharisees Were Insiders With Big Government
Updated: Jan 14
Why would religious leaders develop loyalties with tyrannical governments? Power? Position? Prestige? Apparently, the dynamic of mainstream religious leaders aligning themselves with powerful government officials is nothing new.
After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, the chief priests and Pharisees said "If we leave him alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation." (John 11:48) "We must do something, or Jesus will totally upset our position and favor with the Roman government" they reasoned. The conclusion? It is better for Jesus (the faith-inspiring Son of God) to die, than for us to loose our standing within government. "Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death." (John 11:53)
One would assume religious leaders would understand the dignity of the individual, the freedom of conscience, and the importance of faith, revival and the preaching of truth. However, history has proven the lust for power and desire to be a government insider often trump defending people of faith and their God-given right to choose the Savior.
